2013-2014 Planet and Ocean Speakers Series

The three part lecture series focuses on science, the beauty of the planet and conservation, with a spotlight on the Indian River Lagoon.

The series will kick off with a free, special forum discussion on the Indian River Lagoon led by Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers/TCPalm.com.

Feature article and photography highlights along with a panel discussion with journalists letting people know what they've learned about the Indian River Lagoon.

Joe Acaba is an educator, hydrogeologist, and NASA astronaut. He completed his training in February 2006 and was assigned to STS-119, which flew from March 15 to March 28, 2009 to deliver the final set of solar arrays to the International Space Station. Acaba served as a Flight Engineer aboard the International Space Station from May 17 to September 17, 2012. Acaba will talk about his experience in space and how it makes him appreciate the Earth more.

National Geographic Photographer Carlton Ward Jr. is a conservation photographer whose passion for nature was born from the Florida landscape, where eight generations of family history (Ward is the grandson of Florida Governor Carlton) have grounded his perspective. Ward recently was on assignment photographing the Indian River Lagoon and will discuss his work and the lagoon.

Science Sea Stories and Out Takes – a look back at 30 years of unpublishable bloopers and blunders. Science does not always run smooth, especially science at sea. Dr. Edie Widder, a deep sea explorer and MacArthur fellow, will share some behind-the-scenes stories of 3 decades of research at sea.

Tickets for the three part lecture series /$75 in advance. Individual tickets/ $35 in advance / $40 at the door. Student tickets $20 (at the door only). All subscription purchases will include a free ticket to Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers/TCPalm.com's Forum Discussion.

Ticket will be held at the door.
